Book Club
We have been running a book club for some time; recently we’ve been reading the Tin Tin book Red Rackham’s Treasure. We read it together, with members taking on the roles of the characters. It’s great for building communication skills and confidence. Next term, we are planning to create our own comic book, so watch this space!
Dance Lessons
Dancing has always been a popular activity with many of our members (and volunteers!) – so over the last couple of terms we enlisted the help of a dance tutor. We’ve learnt dance steps and styles from salsa to line dancing; cha-cha-cha to waltz; and disco to ballet…watch out Strictly Come Dancing!
The Members’ Agreement
The best way for people to take ownership of a youth club is for them to choose its rules; our members have set their own rules for behaviour in the club. We took photographs of members illustrating the rules and these are now displayed on the wall at the club.
Funky Friday
Some of our members aged over 18 meet every couple of months on a Friday night. The members themselves decide where to go – often to a restaurant, bowling alley or pub. This is important for many of our members, who have very limited opportunities to either make decisions for themselves or to socialise with their friends in the evening.
Flying Squad
This year we started a new activity called “Flying Squad”. A group of members and volunteers visit learning disability residential homes and offer a range of activities to those people who can’t make it to The Squad. This gives members a chance to volunteer themselves and put something back in the community.
